The towns — read this first

The Côte d'Azur is a 100-mile stretch from Saint-Tropez east to the Italian border. Each town along it has a distinct stay character. The five below absorb most slow-travel stays. Pick the town first; the property is the second decision.

1. Hôtel Le Negresco — Nice (Promenade des Anglais)

Hôtel Le Negresco is the iconic Belle Époque palace on the Promenade des Anglais, opened in 1913 and family-owned ever since. It runs 124 rooms and suites with a museum-grade art collection (over 6,000 pieces — Niki de Saint Phalle, Salvador Dalí, others), the dual-Michelin-star Le Chantecler restaurant, and direct beach access. Per the operator's published material and Michelin Guide coverage, the property is consistently described as the most distinctive 5-star on the French Riviera. The pink dome is a Nice landmark.

2. Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel — Nice

Anantara Plaza Nice occupies a restored Belle Époque building on Avenue de Verdun, a five-minute walk from the Promenade des Anglais and the old town. It runs 151 rooms and suites with a rooftop bar, a Michelin-recommended restaurant (Seen by Olivier), and a small spa. Per the operator's published material, the property is part of Anantara's European expansion and positions explicitly as a 5-star alternative to the chain-luxury options on the Promenade. Strong for travelers who want a walking base for both the old town and the Place Masséna shopping district.

3. Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc — Cap d'Antibes

Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc occupies a private 22-acre estate on the tip of the Cap d'Antibes peninsula, opened in 1870 and operated as the original Riviera grand hotel. It runs 117 rooms and suites split between the Hôtel du Cap (the main building) and the Eden-Roc Pavilion (a separate seafront annex with a heated saltwater pool carved into the cliff). Per the operator's published material and historic Tatler coverage, the property is consistently the upper bound of the Côte d'Azur stay register. Cash only at the original property until 2006 — now solidly modernized but the legacy persists.

4. La Colombe d'Or — Saint-Paul-de-Vence

La Colombe d'Or sits at the entrance to the medieval village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, family-run since 1920 and consistently included on lists of the most distinctive small hotels in France. It runs 25 rooms and suites surrounding an inner courtyard, with a private art collection that includes original works by Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Léger, and Calder — most given by the artists in exchange for stays. Per the operator's published material and recurring Vogue coverage, the property's restaurant and the art-walk-as-hotel format are the draw. Best for couples on a 1-week perched-village stay.

5. Five Seas Hotel Cannes — Cannes (Croisette)

Five Seas Hotel Cannes occupies a building two blocks back from La Croisette, restored across 45 rooms and suites with rooftop pool views over the Mediterranean. It is a 5-star boutique that consistently appears in Mr & Mrs Smith and Tablet Hotels picks for Cannes when travelers don't want the Croisette palace-chain-hotel format. Includes a Cinq Mondes spa, a tapas bar, and a rooftop restaurant. Best for travelers who want a Cannes base during festival season (May) or for the design-led 5-star register at a lower price than the Croisette palaces.

How to choose between them

The split is roughly: Le Negresco if you want the Belle Époque palace experience on the Promenade. Anantara Plaza Nice for Nice walkability at a slightly lower price tier. Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc if budget is no concern and Cap d'Antibes peninsula is what you want. La Colombe d'Or if Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the art collection are the trip. Five Seas Cannes if Cannes is the base and you want a design-led 5-star.

When to go

The Côte d'Azur peak is mid-June through August. The Cannes Film Festival is mid-May (book months ahead, avoid that fortnight if you don't have a credential). The Monaco Grand Prix is the last weekend of May. September is the strong shoulder month: warm Mediterranean water, lower hotel rates, and the major festivals over. October is hotel-rate-friendly but cooler. Avoid mid-July through mid-August if you can — the "août" peak is when the entire region is at maximum tourist density and price.
