The regions — read this first

Crete is the largest Greek island — 260km east to west, with a 3-hour drive between Chania (west airport) and Heraklion (east airport). Most slow-travel stays anchor in one region rather than driving end-to-end. Pick the region first; the property is the second decision.

Slow-travel notes for Crete

Crete has two main airports — Chania (CHQ) in the west, Heraklion (HER) in the east — both connect to most European hubs in 3–4 hours. Renting a car is the practical default; the E75 north-coast highway runs the length of the island, with the south coast and interior mountains reached by smaller roads. Peak season runs July–August; the shoulder windows (May–June, September–early October) hold rates 30–40% lower and the marquee properties open early-April and close late-November. The Samaria Gorge hike is the headline day-trip; Knossos (Heraklion) and the Lasithi Plateau are the cultural anchors.
