Where to Stay on Lake Como.

Five properties worth a booking shortlist for a slow-travel base on Lake Como for five to ten nights. The shortlist combines two heritage grand villas (Villa d'Este, Grand Hotel Tremezzo), the World's 50 Best Hotels №1 from three consecutive years (Passalacqua), one Patricia Urquiola contemporary build (Il Sereno), and the only Relais & Châteaux address on the lake (Villa Serbelloni). Sourced from operator listings, MICHELIN Guide hotel listings, Leading Hotels of the World, the World's 50 Best Hotels list, and current rate data. Each booking link routes through Stay22 to compare published rates across Booking, Hotels.com, Expedia, and Vrbo.

The towns — read this first

Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y; most marquee hotels sit on the southern half of the lake, with the highest density in the southwest (Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Tremezzo) and the southeast (Torno, Bellagio's promontory). Pick the town first; the property is the second decision.

1. Villa d'Este — Cernobbio

Villa d'Este occupies a late-Renaissance villa built 1565–70 by Pellegrino Tibaldi for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, converted to a hotel in 1873, run independently across 152 rooms and suites split between the Cardinal's Building and the Queen's Pavilion. Per the operator's published material and Leading Hotels of the World listing, the 25-acre terraced gardens hold a 16th-century Nympheum mosaic, neoclassical facades, and period interiors with silk drapes, antiques, and Baroque frescoes. The MICHELIN Guide includes it; Travel + Leisure covers it consistently. The floating lake pool is one of the most-photographed details on the lake. Strong for old-world grand-tour stays where the building and gardens are the experience.

Per the operator's published material and Mr & Mrs Smith Boutique Hotel Awards coverage, BAMO and the De Santis family reimagined the interiors and seven acres of terraced gardens in 2022, retaining frescoes and antiques and adding an underground spa. The World's 50 Best Hotels named it №1 globally in 2023, 2024, and 2025 — the most-decorated new-classic on the lake. Wallpaper, Condé Nast Traveler, MICHELIN Guide, and Assouline all cover it. Strong for slow-travel couples who want the most-acclaimed lake property at residential 24-suite scale.

Per the operator's published material and Historic Hotels of the World listing, the original Francesco Congeliani frescoes remain in place; the property faces Bellagio across the lake with three pools (including a floating water-on-the-water pool). Mr & Mrs Smith, Condé Nast Traveler, and the World's 50 Best Hotels Discovery list all feature it. Per the operator's published material and Wallpaper coverage, vertical gardens by botanist Patrick Blanc frame the lake-facing facade; a 19-metre infinity pool is cantilevered over the water. All 30 suites are lakefront. Leading Hotels of the World member. The MICHELIN Guide gives Il Sereno Al Lago its restaurant 1 star. Per the operator's published material and Historic Hotels of the World listing, the Salone Reale holds Murano chandeliers, frescoed ceilings, and gilded mirrors; the private garden on Bellagio's promontory has direct lake access. The MICHELIN Guide gives the on-site Mistral restaurant 1 star. Condé Nast Traveler covers it consistently in the Italy selection. Strong for travelers who want a walkable Bellagio old-town base with full grand-hotel amenities.

How to choose between them

The split is roughly: Villa d'Este if the late-Renaissance gardens and grand-tour pedigree are the trip. Passalacqua if you want the most-decorated new property at 24-suite scale and don't mind the Moltrasio address (5 min south of Cernobbio). Grand Hotel Tremezzo if Belle Époque grandeur facing Bellagio appeals. Il Sereno if design-led contemporary and Urquiola interiors matter. Villa Serbelloni if Bellagio old-town walkability and Relais & Châteaux service are the brief.

Slow-travel notes for Lake Como

The lake is large and the road around it is narrow — most slow-travel stays orient around either the southwest shore (Cernobbio + Moltrasio + Tremezzo, accessed via Como city) or the Bellagio promontory (accessed via Lecco or by ferry). The seasonal ferries (Easter through late October) are materially faster than driving for inter-town transit. Malpensa airport (MXP) is roughly 1h15 from Cernobbio; Bergamo (BGY) is 1h30 from Bellagio. Peak season runs late May through September — book 9–12 months ahead at the marquee properties. The shoulder windows (early May, October) hold the gardens at their fullest and the rates 20–40% lower.
