The regions — read this first

Mallorca splits into four hotel-density zones. Pick the zone first; the property is the second decision.

• Palma Old Town (La Lonja, La Seu, El Born) — the historic capital, with the cathedral, the Arab Baths, and the Mercat de l'Olivar. Walkable end-to-end. Default for stays that prioritize city walkability over resort grounds.
• Tramuntana (Deià, Sóller, Valldemossa, Es Capdellà) — the UNESCO-listed mountain range running along the west coast. Honey-stone villages, artist colonies, hairpin coastal drives. Strong for slow travelers who want quiet, hikes, and Chopin-piano-museum days.
• North coast (Pollença, Formentor, Alcúdia) — the quieter end of the island, with Cap de Formentor and Pollença's medieval old town. Strong for 7+ night stays that combine sea and mountain.
• Bay of Palma + south coast (Cala Blava, Es Trenc, Llucmajor) — the south-facing coast, with the Bay of Palma's calmer waters and the Es Trenc dunes. Resort properties cluster here.

1. Belmond La Residencia — Deià (Serra de Tramuntana)

Son Brull if Pollença on the north coast and Carme Pinós architecture matter. Can Bordoy if Palma Old Town walkability and a private walled garden are the brief. Castell Son Claret if a large finca estate 30 minutes from Palma is the angle.

Slow-travel notes for Mallorca

Palma airport (PMI) connects to all major European cities; rental car is the practical default for itineraries that combine Palma with the Tramuntana or north coast. The Sóller Railway (a 1912 wooden vintage train) connects Palma to Sóller in 1h, then a tram continues to Port de Sóller — both are slow-travel-appropriate alternatives to driving. Peak season runs July–August (severely crowded, especially the Tramuntana coastal road); shoulder windows (May–June and September–October) are the practical slow-travel periods, with rates 30–40% lower and the cycling and hiking infrastructure at its best. Mallorcan-Catalan is the regional language alongside Spanish; English is widely spoken in hospitality.
