Where to Stay in Marrakech.

Five properties worth a booking shortlist for a slow-travel base in Marrakech for five to fourteen nights. The list combines two palace-grade properties, two medina riads, and one Palmeraie resort — a deliberate spread across the city's three hotel-density zones. Sourced from operator listings, Mr & Mrs Smith and Condé Nast Traveler coverage, Wallpaper features, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the World's 50 Best Hotels list, and current rate data. Each booking link routes through Stay22 to compare published rates across Booking, Hotels.com, Expedia, and Vrbo.

The neighborhoods — read this first

Marrakech splits cleanly into three hotel-density zones. Most slow-travel stays pick one. Pick the zone first; the property is the second decision.

1. El Fenn — Medina (near Bab el Ksour)

El Fenn occupies thirteen interconnected riad buildings on a two-acre medina site near Bab el Ksour, founded by Vanessa Branson and Howell James (and joined the Akan collection in November 2025), run across 41 rooms and suites. Per the operator's published material and Mr & Mrs Smith coverage, tadelakt walls in jewel tones, hand-carved cedar and plasterwork, zellige tiling, and oversized lanterns are punctuated by contemporary works from Branson's personal art collection. A 1,300 sqm rooftop and three pools knit the compound together. Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2017, 2021, 2022, 2024. Wallpaper covers it. Strong for slow-travel couples who want a creative, art-forward medina base with rooftop life and walkable souks.

2. Royal Mansour Marrakech — Medina (inside the ramparts)

Royal Mansour occupies a purpose-built palace-grade compound commissioned by King Mohammed VI inside the medina ramparts near Bab Doukkala, run across 53 private three-story riads. Per the operator's published material and Condé Nast Traveler coverage, OBMI architects designed the property as a miniature medina — more than 1,200 Moroccan master craftsmen executed the zellige, tadelakt, marquetry, carved cedar, and wrought iron. Each riad opens onto a private atrium, fireplace, and rooftop solarium. World's 50 Best Hotels 2024 №3 (the Gin Art of Hospitality Award). Architect Magazine and PaperCity cover it consistently. Strong for palace-grade stays for couples wanting absolute privacy, full butler service, and a self-contained medina compound.

3. La Sultana Marrakech — Kasbah

La Sultana occupies five historic riads stitched together beside the Saadian Tombs in the Kasbah, run as a Small Luxury Hotels of the World property across 28 rooms and suites. Per the operator's published material and the American Express Hotel Collection listing, master craftsmen layered Almohad, Saadian, and Alaouite-era detailing in carved woodwork, zellige, and plasterwork. A 2,000 sqm rooftop overlooks UNESCO-listed Kasbah monuments including the Royal Palace and Saadian Tombs. The Luxury Editor covers it. Strong for history-minded couples who want heritage architecture next door to the Royal Palace rather than the souk-side medina.

4. Selman Marrakech — Palmeraie

Selman Marrakech occupies a five-acre Palmeraie estate on route d'Amizmiz, designed by Jacques Garcia, run across 56 rooms, suites, and villas. Per the operator's published material and Mr & Mrs Smith coverage, the Arabo-Moorish palace is built around an 80-metre reflecting pool and stables for purebred Arabian horses. Black-and-white zellij, suede walls, lacquer, dark woods, and velvet give the property a theatrical counterpoint to the medina riads. Scott Dunn includes it in the Morocco selection. The Palmeraie position is the pitch — resort-scale grounds with pool laps, spa, and horses, with an easy 15-minute taxi to the medina. Strong for couples on longer stays who want a resort base over a medina-only experience.

5. Riad Mena & Beyond — Medina (Derb Jdid near Mouassine)

Riad Mena & Beyond occupies an early-19th-century riad on Derb Jdid near Mouassine, restored over seven years by Philomena Schurer Merckoll and Romain Michel Meniere, run across 6 rooms (5 suites plus the Writer's Den). Per the operator's published material and Wallpaper coverage, the original carved wood and plaster ceilings are preserved; the look pairs traditional tadelakt, cedar, and limestone with mid-century modernist furniture for a Moroccan-minimal vibe rarely seen at this scale. SUITCASE Magazine and PRIOR cover it. The 6-room scale and chef/hammam/pool service make it strong for design-literate couples who want a small, owner-run riad with a contemporary edge.

How to choose between them

The split is roughly: El Fenn if you want the creative, art-forward medina base with three pools and rooftop life. Royal Mansour if absolute privacy in 53 private three-story riads and palace-grade service are the trip. La Sultana if the quieter Kasbah position next to the Royal Palace and Saadian Tombs appeals. Selman if a Palmeraie resort with horses and laps appeals over medina immersion. Riad Mena if 6-room owner-run intimacy with a Moroccan-minimal aesthetic is the brief.

Slow-travel notes for Marrakech

Marrakech is sharply seasonal. October–April is the practical slow-travel window — daytime temperatures sit in the 60–80°F range and the medina is comfortable for walking. June–August daytime highs regularly exceed 100°F and most pools are oversubscribed. Marrakech-Menara (RAK) is a 15-minute taxi from the medina; most marquee properties offer airport transfer in a Mercedes E-Class for €30–80. Medina lanes are mostly unmappable on Google Maps; a porter from the riad meets guests at the nearest taxi drop-off and walks luggage in. ATM cash withdrawal is reliable; haggling is expected in the souks. Most Western passports get visa-on-arrival.
