The regions — read this first

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean. Most slow-travel stays cluster in one of four regions. Pick the region first; the property is the second decision.

• Taormina + Mazzaro — the cliff-edge town with the Greek Theatre and the post–White Lotus visibility. Highest hotel density in the upper-luxury tier. Default for first-visit short stays.
• Mount Etna (Zafferana Etnea, Linguaglossa) — the volcano's eastern slopes, with vineyard estates and lava-stone resorts at 500–1,000m. Strong for slow travelers who want hiking, wine, and a 45-minute drive into Taormina rather than the cliffside crowd.
• Aeolian Islands (Salina, Lipari, Stromboli) — the volcanic archipelago off Sicily's north coast. Vineyard resorts, smaller properties, ferry-only access. Strong for 7+ night island stays.
• Val di Noto (Noto, Modica, Syracuse / Ortigia) — the Baroque corner on the southeastern coast, UNESCO-listed. Ortigia is the most walkable old town in Sicily. Strong for design-and-Baroque-anchored stays.

1. San Domenico Palace, Taormina — A Four Seasons Hotel

San Domenico Palace occupies a 14th-century Dominican convent fused with an 1896 Liberty-style Grand Hotel wing in central Taormina, reopened in 2021 by Four Seasons after a full restoration led by architect Valentina Pisani, run across 111 rooms and suites. Capofaro (Salina) if Aeolian island vineyard quiet is the brief and you want a longer 7+ night stay off the mainland. Monaci delle Terre Nere if Mount Etna design-led countryside appeals over coastal cliffs. Palazzo Artemide (Ortigia) if the Baroque southeastern corner is the angle.

Slow-travel notes for Sicily

Catania (CTA) is the eastern gateway airport — 45 minutes to Taormina, 25 minutes to Mount Etna properties, 1h15 to Ortigia. Palermo (PMO) is the western gateway, 2h30 from Catania by car or 3h by rail. The Aeolian Islands are reached by hydrofoil from Milazzo (1h drive from Catania) or by ferry from Naples — Salina is 1h45 from Milazzo. Driving the island is the practical default for itineraries that cross regions; renting a car at Catania and dropping at Palermo is widely supported. Peak season runs late June through August; the practical slow-travel windows are May–early June and September–October when rates are 30–50% lower and crowds materially thinner. Post–White Lotus demand for Taormina specifically has not eased — book 6–9 months ahead at the marquee properties.
