The ledger
- $980Rent · 53% · Furnished one-bedroom in central neighborhoods like Graça or Anjos, booked month-to-month via Spotahome or local agents. The short-term premium is real — a yearly lease for the same apartment runs around $650.

- $180Coworking · 10% · Drop-in days at Second Home and Cowork Central. Cheaper than the daily café-with-three-coffees route.
- $327Everything Else · 17% · eSIM, laundry, haircut, a weekend train to Sintra, pharmacy, gym drop-ins, one concert. The line item that always gets bigger than expected.
- $1,847Total · 100% · Solo · one-bedroom · no airfare. March 2026, all in.
What the numbers show
Lisbon is no longer a cheap city. But it is still an honest one — rent is the whole lever. Everything else fits.
The line that surprised us
"Everything Else" varied 3× more across budget shares than Rent did. The category nobody tracks is the one that breaks budgets. We dug into that pattern in The short-term rental premium.
On the weekend-trip line
Sintra and beyond
The Sintra day trip is the most-cited add to the "Everything Else" line in budget shares — typically a €15–25 train + a €15–35 castle ticket. The aggregator with the most consistent English-language guides and free-cancellation terms is GetYourGuide's Lisbon catalog, which lists the Pena Palace + Quinta da Regaleira combinations most expats end up booking.
