The mail forwarding services real expats use.
USPS Premium Forwarding, Earth Class Mail, Traveling Mailbox, Anytime Mailbox. The pros, cons, price points, and the one detail most posts miss.
The four-way comparison
- $25/wkUSPS Premium Forwarding · temporary only · Forwards all mail weekly to a foreign address. Capped at one year. Useful as a transitional bridge, not a long-term solution.
- $25–$199/moEarth Class Mail · scan + forward · Scans envelopes, opens on request, forwards selectively. Real street addresses in 80+ US cities. Best for higher-volume / business use.
- $15–$55/moTraveling Mailbox · scan + forward · Scans, forwards, deposits checks. Cheapest tier covers most solo nomads. North Carolina-based — good for residency in NC, CO, FL on the higher tier.
- $10–$30/moAnytime Mailbox · marketplace · A network of independent operators. Pricing varies by location. Useful when a specific city address matters (e.g., for state residency in TX, FL, SD).
The detail most posts miss
Not every mail-forwarding address is accepted as a residency address by every state DMV, the IRS, or your bank. CMRA (Commercial Mail Receiving Agency) addresses are flagged in the USPS database — banks and DMVs sometimes reject them. The workaround is choosing a forwarder whose address is registered as a residential or office street address, not as a CMRA box.
The pattern long-term nomads use
A two-tier setup: a CMRA-friendly state mail forwarder for residency (TX, FL, SD via the providers above) plus a digital-only inbox for routine bills and banks that prefer email statements. We unpack the residency side in state residency for nomads.
