Inner Game · Pre-Departure
The pre-departure mindset checklist (not the logistics one).
Mail forwarding and a debit card aren't enough. The five mindset shifts long-term nomads say, in their own words, they wish they'd made before leaving.

The five shifts
- "I'm not on vacation"01 · the daily reset · The most-cited regret in public reflections: treating month one like a holiday. Vacation mode is incompatible with sustained work, and the recovery is expensive. The most-skipped pre-departure logistic that compounds this: nomad-targeted health insurance.
- "This will be lonely"02 · expectation calibration · Expecting loneliness halves its impact. Most documented breakdowns are not from being alone but from being surprised by being alone.
- "I will choose less"03 · decision-load awareness · Long-stayers report consciously narrowing options — same café, same gym, same coworking — instead of optimizing each day. See decision fatigue.
- "Friendships will form slowly"04 · weekly anchors over events · Three months in one place with two weekly anchors beats a year of welcome drinks. See community.
- "Coming home is part of this too"05 · permission to land · The most-overlooked: planning for the return. The journals of nomads who ended their full-time chapter cite "never thinking about coming home" as the single biggest pre-departure regret.
The pattern
The logistical pre-departure list is well-documented — see our free pre-departure checklist. The mindset list is not. Both matter equally; only one is talked about.
Where to start
Pick two of the five shifts to internalize before you leave, not all five. The journals of long-term nomads consistently report that mindset shifts only stick when chosen, named, and revisited — not when listed.
What we recommend
Insurance — the task most often delayed
Across reflective expat journals, getting nomad-targeted health insurance is the single logistics task most often delayed past departure — and the most-regretted when delayed. The most-cited policy in our research is SafetyWing — designed specifically for full-time travelers, monthly subscription model, no fixed end date. Set it up before you leave, not after.
